Tutorial 1: 5GB e-Health Networks and Related Services, from Theory to Reality

Presenters: Di Zhang and Yunkai Zhai

Abstract: Information and communication technology (ICT) for health has been widely discussed. However, due to the limited number of connected devices, slow transmission speed, low communication reliability and higher latency drawbacks of prior cellular communications generations, e-health was not widely adopted. The ongoing development of 5G is accelerating the practical use of e-health networks and related services. Stunning 5G envisions are the ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC), enhanced mobile broadband (eMMB) and massive machine type communications (mMTC), which fit the requirements of e-health networks and related services perfectly. However, due to the technology limitations of 5G’s current version, more endeavors are still needed, especially for the URLLC. Besides the technical limitations, ethics and privacy information protection are also challenging the deployments of 5G and beyond technologies (5GB) e-health networks and related services. Motivated by the above, in this tutorial, we cover the related technology solutions, user cases, future research trends and challenges for the 5GB e-health networks and related services. Ultimately, the intent of this tutorial is to provide an in-depth exposition of 5GB research and to serve as a basis for stimulating more out-of-the-box research about the 5GB e-health networks and services.

Tutorial 2: Transdisciplinary Methods for Interdisciplinary Research in IoT-Based Cyber-Physical Systems and Human-Machine Interfaces

Presenters: Pedro Henrique Juliano Nardelli, Renan Cipriano Moioli, and Augusto José Venâncio Neto

Abstract: Neurosciences and wireless communications are converging. Novel technologies are expanding Brain-Machine Interface (BMI) usage whereas Internet of Things (IoT) offer a myriad of applications. In fact, human- and machine-type communications are soon to be complemented by brain-type communications (BTC), in which users’ brains and networks seamlessly interact. One can think of Extended Reality applications, intelligent vehicles, and brain networks, to mention but a few examples. The goal of this tutorial is to discuss the state-of-the art of BMI and IoT, focusing on emerging technologies that may support BTC. We will first provide an introduction into BMIs, including properties of the nervous system, neural coding and decoding, and neural signal processing. We proceed by discussing IoT as the basis of smart infrastructure, with special attention to topics such as quality of physical experience and cyber-physical systems. How can brain networks improve machine-type communication architectures of IoT-based systems? Can biologically inspired processing improve the energy efficiency in modern communication systems? Does IoT create structures of awareness (cognition) of cyber-physical systems? What are the security, privacy, and ethical issues underlying this topic? These are examples of questions we will pose during the tutorial.
